The Legal Counsel will provide comprehensive legal support to BP’s Sierra Leone operations, ensuring compliance with local regulations, international standards, and corporate policies. Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, negotiate, and review commercial contracts, joint venture agreements, and service agreements.
  • Provide legal advice on licensing, environmental permits, and regulatory compliance specific to the oil & gas sector.
  • Monitor changes in Sierra Leone legislation and advise the business on potential impacts.
  • Manage and coordinate external counsel for litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including board meetings, resolutions, and statutory filings.
  • Conduct legal risk assessments for new projects, acquisitions, and operational initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver training on legal compliance, anti‑corruption, and corporate ethics.
  • Collaborate with health, safety, and environmental teams to ensure integrated risk management.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of Sierra Leone oil & gas legislation, contract law, and international commercial law.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation abilities with attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage complex legal matters independently.
  • Effective communication skills to convey legal concepts to non‑legal stakeholders.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to corporate integrity.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from a recognized university or equivalent qualification is required. Admission to the bar in Sierra Leone or a comparable jurisdiction is mandatory. Additional certifications in energy law or international arbitration are desirable.

Experience

At least five years of relevant legal experience within the oil & gas industry, preferably with exposure to upstream operations, joint ventures, and regulatory compliance in West Africa. Experience working in a multinational corporate environment is highly valued.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a pension scheme.
