Job Overview

The AI Ethics Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of ethical guidelines for AI projects across Microsoft’s operations in Sierra Leone. This role bridges technical expertise with policy analysis, ensuring that AI systems are transparent, fair, and aligned with both international standards and local societal expectations. You will collaborate with product teams, legal counsel, and external stakeholders to embed ethical considerations throughout the AI lifecycle, from data collection to deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an AI Ethics framework tailored to Sierra Leone’s cultural, legal, and economic context.
• Conduct risk assessments for AI models, focusing on bias, privacy, and societal impact.
• Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to integrate ethical checkpoints into development pipelines.
• Provide guidance on compliance with international standards such as the EU AI Act, OECD AI Principles, and local data protection regulations.
• Lead workshops and training sessions for internal teams and external partners on responsible AI practices.
• Monitor emerging AI regulations and advise senior leadership on strategic adjustments.
• Prepare clear documentation, reports, and communication materials for stakeholders, including government agencies and civil society.

Required Skills

• Deep understanding of AI technologies, machine learning pipelines, and data governance.
• Strong knowledge of ethical frameworks, human rights principles, and AI policy landscapes.
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities to evaluate complex technical scenarios.
• Effective communication skills to translate technical concepts into accessible language for diverse audiences.
• Experience working with cross‑functional teams in a multicultural environment.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of local languages (Krio, Mende, Temne) is an advantage.

Education

A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Philosophy, Ethics, Law, or a related discipline is required. Certifications in AI ethics, data privacy (e.g., CIPP/E), or responsible AI (e.g., Microsoft Responsible AI certification) are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five years of professional experience in AI development, policy analysis, or ethics advisory roles. Prior experience in a technology company, research institution, or regulatory body is preferred. Demonstrated track record of developing ethical guidelines or conducting impact assessments for AI systems is essential.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and equity incentives may be provided in line with Microsoft’s global compensation philosophy.
